I don’t come from money. I barely got through high school. No college. No connections. No business plan.
I started in roofing supply. Many of my closest friends were high-quality roofing contractors. They were great people. They worked hard. They did great work. But most of them were self-employed, not business owners. They couldn’t take a week off without everything falling apart.
That’s when I realized the difference between being self-employed and actually owning a business. And the main difference? Systems.
I got into the contracting side and spent 4 years transforming another roofing company from chaos into a well-oiled profit machine. I built the systems, built the structure, built the results. When it was done, the owner wouldn’t give me equity. So I walked.
I mortgaged my house to buy equipment, fund marketing, and finance the business. I had partners, a crew, and payroll to hit from day one. There was no room to fail.
We did $2 million in year one. That was 2006. That’s like doing $4 million today. It wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t hustle. It was because I had a roadmap. I’d spent 4 years building one at somebody else’s company. Now it was my turn.
Three years later, my company absorbed the one I had left.
We built Guardian Roofing into one of the largest residential retail roofing companies in America. 100% W2 employees. No subs. No storm chasing. We ran like a factory, not a circus.
By the time I was done, I had 10 salespeople. But because of the systems and processes in place, I was only needed a couple days a week. I was not needed in the day-to-day. The business ran whether I was there or not.
I didn’t exit because I burned out. I exited because the company didn’t need me anymore. Built an 8-figure company. Sold all the way out. I wasn’t required to stay on for years like most owners are. That’s what a real business looks like.
FROM LADDERS TO AN 8-FIGURE COMPANY
Watched great contractors work themselves into the ground. They were incredible roofers but had no systems to run a real business. I decided to learn how to build one the right way.
